 John Singer Sargent and Vizcaya

Members Discussion led by Annelise K. Madsen

His lush canvases made him one of the most sought-after portrait painters of the 19th century. As the painter emerged in the art world, he found patronage in many Chicagoans, including both Charles & James Deering. Join us and Annelise K. Madsen for a lively discussion where we will explore John Singer Sargent’s relationship with the Deering family as well as learn about some of Sargent’s watercolors that were painted here at Vizcaya — Previously on display at the Art Institute of Chicago exhibition ”John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age.”

After the discussion, guests are encouraged to participate in guided experiences where staff will display digital images of the watercolors from the same vantage point they were painted.

Annelise K. Madsen is the Gilda and Henry Buchbinder Assistant Curator of American Art at the Art Institute of Chicago and author of the publication “John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age.”

IMPORTANT NOTE: This event is a discussion, not an art exhibit. Sargent works are not being displayed during the event.
