 ---

Vizcaya is home to a subtropical forest called a Rockland hammock. This ecosystem is critically endangered due to overdevelopment. Many of the plants and trees in this old-growth forest are not found in any other habitat in the United States.  Vizcaya’s Rockland hammock is one of the few remaining stretches of old and original forests left in Miami. The preservation of this forest at Vizcaya has recently been awarded recognition as part of the Old Growth Forest Network. To celebrate this rare and prestigious recognition, we invite you to join us for a restorative Forest Bathing Meditation session.

What we’ll do - James Deering intended to restore his health at Vizcaya, and we will do the same!  We will begin with a 20-minute seated meditation session followed by a one-hour long guided forest bathing session. Led by Fereshteh Toosi, a certified Forest Therapy Guide, this experience will take place within the Rockland Hammocks that surround the Vizcaya estate. Forest bathing takes the form of a guided walk designed to relax and rejuvenate. We'll bathe our senses in the healing qualities of our environment, make time for self-reflection, and share our experiences through conversation. We'll leave refreshed by a unique

contemplative practice that we can carry into our everyday routines.

What's provided - A light snack of dried fruit and nuts and an herbal infusion to close our experience. Vegan and gluten-free. Please let us know if you have any allergies or food restrictions.

What is an Old Growth Forest and why is this designation important?

An OGF is a forest that has attained great age without any significant disturbances and because of its age, exhibits unique geological features.  Old growth forests are diverse and home to many rare species. More carbon is retained in an old growth forest than any other age of the forest. Old forests also can offer many psychological benefits when we experience them. The Old-Growth Forest Network is a national non-profit organization and is the only national network in the U.S. of protected, old-growth, native forests where all generations can experience biodiversity and the beauty of nature. The forests that are dedicated to the national Network are chosen because they are excellent "representative" forests for their specific locale. Forests inducted into our nationwide Network have exceptional ecological integrity and are among the oldest known native forests in their county. They have formal protection in place that ensures that their trees and ecosystems are protected from commercial logging and other kinds of habitat destruction. All Network forests are open to the public so that everyone can experience them for recreation and wellbeing.
